Seghesio family Vineyards of Healdsburg, California, has been a consist producer of drinkable Sangiovese based wines. It has been a favorite of mine for sometime. Sangiovese is the primary grape of Chianti as well as several well-known clones – Brunelli (the grape of Brunello Montalcino); Pignolo (the grape of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano); and Sangioveto. While Sangiovese is most commonly associated with Italy it has been grown in California for sometime with excellent results. You may have heard of the blending of Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon in the so-called "Super Tuscan" phenomenon. This particular wine cost $22.00, which is comparable to Chianti Classico and Reserva pricing and is available in most larger well stocked stores. The wine has fruit flavors with scents of ripe cherries and flavors of blackberries and blueberries. As with Chianti, the wine will go well with red based sauces, pasta dishes, pizza and meats. The pricing on the wine is higher than I like to suggest to pay, but I recommend few wines, but drink many and this is good find.
