Hess Select Cabernet Sauvignon 2001
01-17-2004
With cold weather all around now is the time to crack open a cab and savor the flavor. The Hess Collection Winery of Napa, California has an excellent track record of producing high quality wines, particularly their reds. As you can ascertain from the name of the winery, Hess offers a spectrum of different wines at different pricing tiers. Pricing of wines can go from $10.00 a bottle up to $70.00 which is a nice spread and excellent bottles are available throughout the price range. Hess has been a favorite California Cabernet Sauvignon producer of ours for several years now, and with the glut of California wine grapes, wineries such as Hess are well positioned to produce quality wine at reasonable pricing.
Their Hess Select wines are lower tier pricing wines with above average quality. The 2001 Hess Select Cabernet Sauvignon we tasted has flavors of red raspberry and cherry, with a tinge of wood and spice. An excellent drinkable wine for today that won’t break the bank since it is priced around $10.00 a bottle. The tannins are not overwhelming and the wine would go well with meat dishes and heartier fare. Its also good to drink on cold winter nights or to bring over a friends house.
