Cold weather and California Cabernet Sauvignon just go so well together. The problem is finding a well priced (read value) and exceptional Cabernet along side so many lackluster wines. A fine example of a tasty and age worthy California Cabernet Sauvignon is the Stags Leap Napa Valley 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine was aged in 100% French oak barrels, 50% of which were new, for 24 months. A small amount of Cabernet Franc and Merlot were added to wine during blending.
The wine will evolve in your glass and open up with tastes of black cherries, plums, with underlying notes of coffee and a slight chocolate hue. While I believe the wine is drinking now, I believe a few years of aging will allow the wine to mature and become quite special. The wine was purchased at a multiple store wine shop for $39.00 (before taxes) and $33.00 at the BJ's warehouse store. The wine retails at many online shops for $48.00, so choose your shop wisely. I have stocked up on a few cases for aging and future enjoyment.
