Q
We live outside Philadelphia and like to take weekend road trips. We also like BYOBs, is it better to bring wine with you on a weekend getaway or buy it when you get to your destination.
Both. First, I like exploring new wine shops that may offer something my wine shop doesn't, so exploring is good. Second, I alway travel with a bottle or two of wine. It's cheaper and faster than room service and some hotels don't have a bar. I found it's best to be prepared. We went to DC for the weekend and stayed at a national/international hotel. The literature in the hotel room said that there was happy hour on the top floor, so we went to check it out. The bar was closed and when we asked why we were told that the hotel had just changed ownership. Needdless to say we weren't happy, did I mention it was supposed to be a happy hour with free food. In any event as we admired the view and tried not to be angry, I noticed that the bar still had wine glasses. I ran back to our room grabbed my travel wine and sat and enjoyed the view with OUR wine.

Q
My wife and I love wine and have been to a few of the wineries in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. We want to do a winery tour in California, but we have friends who live their and say its not that great. What is your read?
First off, you said you were from the Philadelphia area, well when was the last time you saw the liberty bell? My point is when the attraction is close to home it can lose its luster. I love winery tours in California. They are so much fun and pretty easy on the wallet. My few tips are as follows: 1. Hit some wineries in Napa and Sonoma, Napa is very tourist driven and Sonoma less so. Its nice to see the difference between them and they are right next to each other so travel is fast. 2. Go during the off season (i.e. not during the harvest) lines will be shorter or nonexistent and hotels are cheaper.
